No fanciful fairy costume is complete without a set of sparkling fairy wings. This accessory is truly the crowning touch of the entire fairy outfit. Creating your own fairy wings at home will allow for plenty of customization and creativity, resulting in a pair of wings that is perfectly suited to the little pixie donning them. Whether you're making wings for a magical fairy godmother or a delicate woodland fairy, you can make big fairy wings that are suitable for the outfit.
Step 1
Cut a 10-foot length of nine-gauge aluminum wire. This will make a pair of large fairy wings for a child. If you are making big fairy wings for an adult, you may want to cut a longer piece of wire, depending on the size of the individual who will be wearing them.

Step 2
Bend the wire into a figure eight shape. Each loop of the eight will serve as a wing. For taller fairies, shape each loop of the eight into more of an oval than a perfect circle.
Step 3
Trim the ends of the wire so that they line up with the center of the figure eight shape. Wrap duct tape around the center to keep the wings separated and in shape.
Step 4
Use pliers to bend each wing into the desired shape for the finished fairy wings. Indenting the wings sharply in the center will make each wing appear to have two distinct segments. You can also create a gentle wave along the edge of each wing for a look that is more reminiscent of butterfly wings.
Step 5
Cut the legs off of a pair of pantyhose or tights. Stretch one leg over each wing. Pull the hose taunt over the wing and gather in the center of the shape.
Step 6
Sew the gathered ends together in the center. Wrap a piece of ribbon around the center several times to cover the ends of the hose and the sewed area.
Step 7
Decorate the wings with glitter glue or embellishments such as plastic gems or sequins affixed with hot glue.
Step 8
Thread two pieces of elastic through the ribbon covered center of the wings on the back side. Use the individual who will be wearing the wings as a model and wrap a piece of elastic over each shoulder. Knot the elastic into two circles, one over each arm. This will allow the individual to wear the finished wings comfortably.
Tip
Keep in mind that large wings are impressive-looking, but may get in the way at large parties, making it difficult to move and maneuver without swatting others with the wings and possibly knocking over decorations and drinks. Stick to fairy wings which protrude only an inch or two past the shoulders on either side. Make them taller, rather than wider.
