DIY No-Sew Fleece Hat

Get ready for winter and keep your noggin warm with a delightful DIY fleece hat. Even if sewing isn't your thing, you can still make a cozy, soft hat to match every outfit. It's a simple project, and your biggest problem will be choosing which fleece to use from the wonderful selections available at your local fabric shop. All it takes is 1/2 yard of your favorite fleece and about 15 minutes of your time, and you'll be toasty warm.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 yard of fleece

  • Masking tape

  • Measuring tape

  • Sharp scissors

Step 1

For a child's hat, measure the circumference of the head and add 6 inches. Cut out a piece of fleece that is the circumference plus 6 inches by 14 inches.

For an adult's hat, measure the circumference of the head and add 6 inches. Cut out a piece of fleece that is the circumference plus 6 inches by 16 inches.

Step 2

Fold the fleece fabric in half. With the fold on the left, place a piece of masking tape 3 inches down from the top and 3 inches in from the side without the fold.

Step 3

Cut out the 3-inch area inside the masking tape and then remove the masking tape next to the cut.

Step 4

Cut 1/2-inch strips up to the masking tape on both sides with the tape. Use the tape as a guide to know where to stop the cut.

Step 5

Tie the strips into knots along the longer side. (This will become the back of the hat.) Then, remove the tape from both sides.

Step 6

Gather the fringe on the top of the hat, leaving out one set of fringe strips closest to the knots. Use this pair of strips to tie around the gathered fringe with a double knot.

Step 7

Fold up the bottom of the hat twice to form a cuff.
