A sit-down dinner during the holidays (or at any time for that matter) is a real treat, and eating family-style can make a shared meal feel even more warm and cozy. However, passing those hot dishes around the table with regular hot pads can make handing over straight-from-the-oven casseroles pretty awkward. This simple hot-dish basket made from a placemat will make exchanging those hot serving dishes easy and safe. Get ready for everyone at your table to be saying, "Please pass the hot dish."

Things You'll Need
13 x 19-inch double-sided fabric placemat
Two 9-inch pieces of cotton webbing
Straight pins
Step 1
Turn the placemat over so the side you'd like to show on the outside of the basket is facing up. Pinch each corner and pin the cotton webbing into the fold. Pin the other end of the cotton webbing into the other short side corner. Repeat this on the other short side. The cotton webbing will become the handle.
Step 2
Sew along the pin line, making sure the edge of the cotton webbing is caught in the stitching.
Step 3
Turn the basket right side out.
Step 4
Flatten the corners in toward the short side, pin and topstitch in place.
Place your 9 x 13-inch dish inside.
Please pass the hot dish!
You can even flip it to the other side to make it reversible.
